Weekly Photo Challenge: Journey
This week’s WordPress Weekly Photo Challenge is “Journey.” Do images of planes, backpacks, or trains come to mind when you hear this word? Not for me. The first scene that jumps into my brain is the ocean. This instinct is odd given that I have never traveled on the ocean. I have never been on a cruise; never flown overseas. Yet, there’s something about staring at a vast body of water with the wind blowing through my hair that makes me think of journeying far away.
I was born and raised in Colorado, so the largest body of water I saw as a kid included the local reservoir. I remember seeing the ocean for the first time (likely on one of my family’s many trips to North or South Carolina to see family) and feeling very small. My dad would swim with me in his arms to deep enough water where I couldn’t touch and joke about watching for sharks. In North Carolina the water is green and choppy, unlike the clear blue waters of the tropics, so I would frantically look around for shark fins breaking the ocean’s surface.
Back on the beach I would watch the birds drift in the ocean wind and wonder what they saw as they journeyed over the sea.
Sometimes I would get the urge to leave everything behind and sail East.
What do you think of when you hear the word “journey?”
